Page 1 of 2 Gay Travel Paris France | Ideally located in the heart of Europe, France is the gay friendly destination «par excellence». The gay and lesbian population in France lives in a very progressive environment both governmentally and socially. You will be surprised by the spontaneity and warmth of French gays and lesbians, who love to welcome gay visitors and share with them the best that gay France has to offer. Whether you come to Paris for Gay Pride, to celebrate Halloween in le Marais gay clubs, to visit the best French museums, or to cruise in the gay district, le Marais, or in gay bars, you will have the time of your life and take home some unforgettable memories. Paris is one of the gay capitals of Europe and Le Marais is the district where most of the gay scene is happening. It has been the first city to elect an openly gay mayor and it is one of the most visited cities in the world. The part of Paris where the biggest part of the gay scene is concentrated is in Le Marais, the historical center of Paris. Le Marais is actually one of the most hip and expensive areas to live in Paris. It is definitely one of the places to be in France's capital as of now. Classical style buildings, parks, busy street life and the many small shops, restaurants and other businesses give Le Marais a very special, comfortable ambiance that is very typical for Paris. The gay scene in Paris is one of the biggest in Europe and Le Marais is at the fore front of it, boasting more than 300 gay bars, clubs and restaurants. Especially gay nightlife spots are located in Le Marais area and many people flock there every night to lounge, dine or dance the night away. Paris never gets boring as there are so many things to see and do. Nightlife in Paris starts late and the gay clubs in Le Marais area are no exception. Unlike other countries, in Paris you will hardly see anybody going out before midnight. This time is reserved for an extensive dinner or warm up with friends. Later on, the clubs in Le Marais get more lively and at midnight start getting very busy. The best way to reach any place in le Marais, if walking is not an option is to take a taxi or the Metro. The Metro will not operate at night though. After about 0:30, there are no subways anymore until the next morning at about 6. Many people going out are using the Metro so the best thing to do is to stay at the club or bar until the first train comes (or longer that is). It is no problem to go out in Paris until 5, 6 7 or whatever the night allows. After a tiring night out, no place is better on earth than Paris for a healthy brunch the next day. Sit in one of the stylish cafes, enjoy the great food with the delicious many local specialties and zip on a Mimosa, Champagne mixed with orange juice, the ever popular drink in France. Dining options can be found plenty in Paris and it is probably one of the best cities in the world if you like food. French cuisine, with its sophisticated and artful creations is also a feast for the eyes. You will find many small and big restaurants in Le Marais covering a wide range of French but also International food. All of the restaurants understand it very well to keep that familiar local feel to it. Le Marais has a wide range of gay nightlife spots concentrated here. Although it was not always the place to be for gay people, in the last years it has quickly evolved to be the main spot for gay clubs, bars and restaurants. French people are very tolerant, especially in Paris, and here are no hotels that are not gay friendly. Besides being the hotspot for gay people, Le Marais also holds the biggest Jewish community in Paris. You will find many Jewish shops and restaurants. Why not try out the L'As du Fallafel restaurant, Paris most famous Falafel restaurant which is located on 32 rue des Rosiers. For French food, you could go to the delicious Les Epicuriens du Marais on 19 rue Commines or the excellent Restaurant Au 7 which can be found on 7 rue de l'Ave Maria. At the Restaurant Au 7 you can try some of the real local specialties including snails or Foie Gras. But in no way is gay life in Paris limited to the Marais. Gay people live all over the city, and you'll find some kind of gay-oriented business in virtually every neighborhood of the capital. Plenty of guides exist to help you choose your course. Paris is also rife with gay associations, ranging from bridge clubs to political groups to fetishist organizations. In recent years, gay-owned or gay-oriented establishments have taken to identifying themselves with displays of rainbow flags. You'll see them everywhere, a constant reminder that you're in "gay Paree." In 2001 Paris elected its first openly gay mayor, Bertrand Delanoe, affirming the city's tolerance towards us. Indeed, gay life in Paris is inextricably intertwined with dominant (straight) culture, in spite of the Marais' reputation as a "ghetto". Straight Parisians often frequent gay-identified bars and clubs, reputed as the trendiest, most happening places in town, and social gatherings (dinner parties are a high sacred rite of life in France) are usually mixed. It is safe to say, overall, that the French genuinely like gay people, so you should feel welcome everywhere. If you're planning to visit the Mediterranean coast, Nice and Montpellier are the major gay cities. (Strangely, the much larger Marseille has less of a gay scene.) You'll find the people far friendlier and laid-back in this part of France, closer in spirit to Italy or Spain than to Paris. Other interesting French gay centers are found in the southwest (Toulouse, Biarritz), the Alps (Grenoble, Annecy), Brittany (Nantes) and Provence (Avignon). All in all, gay life in "the provinces" is becoming more and more visible and open, with endless choices for the visitor. French provincial gay life exists outside of the cities as well. Often a region's most popular gay club stands in the middle of a wheat field or a forest, miles from any town. This way there is room for parking, and no neighbors to worry about. Remember, though, that nightclubs don't open until eleven or later, and often reach their peak at around two or three a.m. Expect expensive drinks and a lot of standing around feeling invisible in a very smoky room. You may prefer other rural gay rituals, like cruising in the forest or finding sun and fun on one of France's many gay-designated beaches. St. Tropez is possibly the most famous of these, a little "A-gay" universe unto itself. More "populaire" options include L'Espiguette (near Montpellier and Nimes), Hossegor (near Biarritz) and Les Vaches Noires (in Normandy near Caen). Even if you're not a beach-lover, a trip to a gay nudist beach in France is recommended for its anthropological interest, its sexual potential, and a chance to breathe the fresh sea-smelling air -- a welcome antidote to exhaust-choked Paris! |
The Big Island Hawaii | | The Hawaiian Islands, located in the central Pacific Ocean, are the most remote chain of islands in the world. Honolulu is 2,398 miles southwest of San Francisco (the closest continental point), 3,818 miles southeast of Tokyo, and 5,067 miles north of Sydney. Oahu, the third largest island in the chain, contains about 70% of the state’s population and is considered the main island. Honolulu (the state capital and major city), and its beach resort area at Waikiki, are on Oahu. The other islands are referred to as the Neighbor Islands. The island of Hawaii, larger in land area than the other islands combined, is called the “Big Island” so as to avoid confusion with Hawaii, the State. Hawaii’s unique and distinctive mix of peoples and cultures are the result of the co-existence and blending of people from all over the world who have settled in the Islands. Since no group represents an ethnic or religious majority, there is a fairly high degree of tolerance of various lifestyles (including gay and lesbian). The largest ethnic groups are Caucasians (22%), Hawaiian/part Hawaiian (21%), Japanese (18%) and Filipino (13%). Other ethnic groups include Chinese, Korean, Samoan, Tongan, Portuguese, Puerto Rican, Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Hispanics and Blacks. Gay Hawaii waits with serene beaches and some of the most gorgeous scenery in the US. Whether you're headed to the Big Island or the other appealing island destinations in the state, you will find gay life, gay beaches, gay bars and community among the lava rocks and grass skirts. Remember Hawaii is the first state where same-sex marriage almost became legal. Hawaii is different from many other gay destinations in America. Rather than an abundance of gay nightlife and partying, the gay scene in Hawaii offers community and support. There are gay bars to be found as well as gay tour guides to show you sites in that special way. Hawaii is a quality destination regardless of who you are. - State Nickname: The Aloha State

| Island of Maui Maui offers a variety of sights and experiences. The views from atop 10,000-foot Mt. Haleakala (especially popular at sunrise and sunset) are well worth the winding drive past fields of protea and other exotic flowers. The long, winding road to the village of Hana is lined with waterfalls and lush tropical foliage. The quaint old towns of Lahaina and Wailuku are fun for exploring, shopping, and dining. During the winter months, the waters surrounding Maui are ideal for whale-watching. Maui's gay and lesbian community, while mellow and low-key, is quite active in sponsoring fund-raising and social events where visitors are always welcome. Little Beach in Maui: Little Beach is the only generally accepted clothing optional beach on Maui. The only other one that comes close is Red Sand Beach in Hana. At Little Beach you can enjoy nude recreation whenever you would like. Public nudity is illegal in Hawaii, although very little enforcement of anti-nudity laws is done at Little Beach. More likely is enforcement of other laws against such things as drug dealing and drinking in state parks. Little Beach is easily the most crowded beach on Maui. It is only about 1/8 of a mile long, but everyone who wants to sunbathe nude goes there. There are occasionally gawkers or people taking pictures, but in general Little Beach is a charming close-knit community of people who just want to grin and bare it all. Little beach is in Makena State Park, which is south of Wailea, just about as far south as you can drive. One mile past the Maui Prince Hotel, turn right at the sign for Makena State Park. It's easy to miss, so be on the lookout and turn into the parking lot. Walk towards the water and the "Big Beach". Walk to the right (north) all the way to the end and hike up and over the lava-flow trail to get to the beach (you'll usually see other people doing this). Little beach is a nude beach and the far side is the gay part. - Nickname: The Valley Isle

Built in the late 1950s, the Triangle Inn Palm Springs stands as one of Palm Springs' midcentury modern architectural treasures. Although many have assumed that the Inn is a Cody design, it was actually designed by Hugh M. Kaptur, of Hugh M. Kaptur A.I.A. and Associates. The Triangle Inn Palm Springs was one of Kaptur's first commercial designs. He ultimately designed well over 100 Palm Springs buildings and homes, most notably the William Holden home on Southridge Rimcrest, which is featured prominently in the William Holden Collection at the Palm Springs Art Museum. When built, the Triangle Inn Palm Springs (initially known as the Impala Lodge) stood in stark contrast to the square box structures of the previous era. | | | | | | | | |
